BT Challenge - arrives to Cape Town !
A small but enthusiastic crowd of race followers cheered LG FLATRON and the crew, skippered by Conard Humphreys, as they arrived to Cape Town to take 1st place in leg five of the race. They crossed the line on 18th April 19:34 GMT, finishing the 6.200 miles from Sydney in 35 days, 16 Hrs and 10 minutes.
The leg gave them every kind of weather, from dead calm to highest windspeed of
66 knots. with waves up to 50 feet ! Storms were frequent and strong enough for Humphreys to call for the mainsail to be taken down four times during the leg.
Following close arrived at the Victoria waterfront in Cape Town: NORWICH UNION,
BP EXPLORER, QUADSTONE AND SAVE THE CHILDREN.
Next leg will start 13 May, from Cape town to La Rochelle in France, the distance is 5.820 miles and the fleet is expected to arrive there approx. 10 June 2001.
