Turkey wins first ever World Title
Seven first places, this is how Turkish competitor 17 years old Guray Zumbul came through to win the title of 2000 Laser Radial Youth World Championship, becoming the first ever Turkish sailor to gain a world title in sailing, overtaking 136 young sailors from 31 countries. The landmark victory was all the more memorable being on home territory, held in the beautiful surroundings at Cesme.
The Turkish Yachting Federation board member, Mr. Ayadin Yurdum, who has been largerly responsible for the development of the Laser class in Turkey, responded: "Sailing and Yacht racing in Turkey has not been very well developed over the years. I saw the Lesser as the best class to start a long term program. This is only the start and I am looking to the young sailors here this week to be the future Olympic sailors of Turkey.
