BT CHALLENGE - follow up

The leading yachts are expected to pass Cape Horn this afternoon 18/12/2000, after choosing the shorter and shallower route trough the straits of Le Marie. It is amazing how after one week and more than 1000 miles of race from Buenos Aires, the top six yachts are within seven miles of each other near the Cape. The "Norwich Union" is hoping to be the first holding a slender lead of a mile from "Spirit of Hong Kong" which in turn is two miles ahead of "Quadstone" and "LG Flatron". Once past the Cape Horn, 4500 of rough seas and high winds of the Southern Ocean lay in front of the fleet. The estimated time of arrival to Wellington in New Zealand is 13 January 2001.
